West Berkshire Ranks High for Bulky Waste Charges

Newbury waste management experts analysed bulky waste charges across the UK and reveal West Berkshire Council ranks sixth in the South East; the district charges £66.50 for one to three items.

Spelthorne is the local authority with the highest minimum charge in the South East at £90, covering one to five items.

On average, councils in the South East charge the most for bulky waste collections with an average minimum price of £46, up from £45 in February 2025.

The North East saw the largest increase in average prices at 37.31 per cent, likely impacted by Northumberland County Council's increase of 116.35 per cent.

By contrast, prices fell on average in London by 5.20 per cent to £31 and Lewisham reduced their charges to just £5, down from £41.

Mark Hall, Newbury waste management experts at BusinessWaste.co.uk said: "It's clear to see there is a real postcode lottery for bulky waste collections across the UK, with some councils providing a free service while the minimum charge from others nears £100.

"For some areas, neighbouring local authorities even provide a stark contrast.

"Council bulky waste collections provide a great option for residents who may struggle to transport items to their local household waste and recycling centre (HWRC), and ensure streets are kept clean, and that neighbourhood quality is maintained.

"Therefore, the service must be kept at an accessible price point."

The data shows Wokingham Borough Council is in third place with a minimum charge of £72; this applies to a collection of up to three large items or three small electrical items. Fridges are included, but the council doesn't provide any information on discounts or concessions.
